Makoto Shinkai is a director known for creating films featuring absolutely stunning, picturesque backgrounds and gorgeous scenery - to the point that Arkada from Glass Reflection once remarked that Five Centimeters per Second should be named Five Wallpapers per Second.

He also has a knack of creating emotionally powerful romance stories that leave you in a pool of tears, and again, Five Centimeters per Second is the film that makes that point the strongest. It was the first of his films I ever watched, and I have loved his work ever since picking up that DVD on a whim, in HMV over a decade ago.

Since then, I was able to see both Your Name and Weathering With You at the cinema, and at some point, hopefully his latest film, Suzume, which is released in Japan next week.

This DVD features the film The Place Promised in Our Early Days and short film Voices of a Distant Star. Thank you so much for this amazing gift from my favourite director!
